Rara Lake Trek

12 Days

Nepal’s largest lake, high in Mugu, ringed by blue pine and almost entirely to yourself.

Overview

Rara sits at just under 3,000 metres in Mugu district, in the far north-west. It is the largest lake in Nepal and the centre of its smallest national park, and the water changes colour through the day against dark forested hills with the Karnali peaks behind.

Getting there is the trek. The usual approach flies to Nepalgunj and on to Jumla or Talcha, then walks in over passes and through villages of the Karnali – a part of the country that sees a tiny fraction of Nepal’s visitors and looks and feels quite unlike the Annapurna or Everest trails.

Best in spring and autumn. The reward for the distance is silence, and a lake almost nobody else is standing beside.
