Ilam Tour

4 Days

Nepal’s tea country in the far east, green hills terraced to the horizon.

Overview

Ilam lies in the eastern hills near the Indian border, at around 1,200 metres, and grows most of Nepal’s orthodox tea. The landscape is unlike anywhere else in the country: rolling, densely green, the slopes cut into tea rather than rice terraces, with Kanchenjunga on the skyline in clear weather.

Visits take in the gardens and a processing factory, the viewpoints at Sandakpur and Mai Pokhari, and the small towns in between. It is cool, wet and quiet, and it makes an easy pairing with Darjeeling across the border.

Best from October to December and again in spring, when the first flush is picked.
