The trans-Himalayan north – desert canyons, whitewashed villages and the old walled city of Lo Manthang.
Overview
Mustang sits in the rain shadow behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, which is why it looks like Tibet rather than Nepal: bare ochre cliffs, wind, barley fields and flat-roofed villages under enormous sky.
Lower Mustang, around Jomsom, Kagbeni and Marpha, is reached by road or by the flight from Pokhara and needs no special permit. Upper Mustang, north to the walled city of Lo Manthang, is a restricted area with its own permit and its own character – cave monasteries, painted gompas and a kingdom that kept its own royal line into living memory.
Drivable, flyable or walkable, and worth arranging carefully; the permits and the vehicles both need booking ahead.
