Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath in a single day, and the difference between them.
Overview
Nepal is the one place where Hindu and Buddhist practice have grown alongside each other for so long that the boundary is often genuinely unclear – the same shrine visited by both, the same festival kept by both.
This day sets the two beside each other: Pashupatinath on the Bagmati, the most important Shiva temple in the country and an open cremation ground; Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world and the centre of Tibetan Buddhist life in exile; and Swayambhunath on its hill above the city, older than both and claimed by each.
Non-Hindus cannot enter the main Pashupatinath temple but see everything around it. A guide matters here more than anywhere else in the valley.
