The self-arisen stupa on its hill west of the city, older than Kathmandu itself.
Overview
Swayambhunath sits on a hill above the western valley, reached by a stone stairway of more than three hundred steps. The stupa is among the oldest religious sites in Nepal, and the painted eyes on its harmika look out over the city in four directions.
It is Buddhist and Hindu at once, busy from before dawn with people walking the kora, spinning the prayer wheels and lighting butter lamps. The rhesus macaques that give it its other name are everywhere and should be treated with respect rather than snacks.
Best at first light or late afternoon, both for the temperature on the stairs and for the view over the valley.
