Nepal’s holiest Hindu site, on the banks of the Bagmati.
Overview
Pashupatinath is the most important temple to Shiva in Nepal and one of the most important in the Hindu world. The gilded pagoda at its centre is closed to non-Hindus, but the complex around it – shrines, ashrams, the Guhyeshwari temple, the terraces above the river – is open, and it is where most of what you have come to see happens.
Cremations take place on the ghats along the Bagmati throughout the day, in the open, as they have for centuries. It is neither hidden nor performed for visitors, and it is watched quietly and photographed sparingly or not at all.
Sadhus, the Shivaratri festival crowds and the monkeys in the forest above are all part of it. A guide is genuinely necessary here.
