Not everyone has three weeks, and not everyone wants to sleep at 5,000 m. The Everest Panorama trek is the answer to both – the scenery of the Khumbu in seven days, with a maximum sleeping altitude under 3,900 m.
The route
Fly to Lukla, walk to Phakding and Namche Bazaar, take an acclimatisation day at the Everest View Hotel, continue to Tengboche Monastery, then return the same way. Short days, comfortable lodges, and no pass crossings.
What you actually see
Rather a lot. From the ridge above Namche you get Everest, Lhotse, Nuptche and Ama Dablam in a single sweep. Tengboche, at 3,867 m, sits on a saddle with what is probably the finest monastery setting anywhere – Ama Dablam framed directly behind the courtyard. The morning views here are the ones that end up on postcards.
Who it suits
- Families with children old enough to walk four to five hours a day.
- Trekkers with limited leave who still want the Khumbu.
- Anyone who has previously reacted badly to altitude.
- Travellers combining Nepal with another country.
Altitude and safety
Staying below 3,900 m dramatically reduces altitude sickness risk. Mild symptoms are still possible at Namche, which is why the acclimatisation day is built in rather than optional. Beyond that, this is a low-risk trek by Himalayan standards.
Best season
It works nearly year-round. October to November and March to May are ideal; December and February are cold but clear and very quiet. Only the monsoon months of July and August are genuinely poor for views.
