Boudhanath Stupa

1 Day

One of the largest stupas in the world, and the centre of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal.

Overview

Boudhanath rises in tiers from a vast mandala base on the old trade road to Tibet, and the neighbourhood around it has been Tibetan for generations – more so since 1959. The whitewashed dome is repainted regularly and the saffron thrown over it stains the walls in a great sunburst.

The stupa is circled all day, clockwise, by monks, pilgrims and residents; the kora is the local street. Monasteries surround it, most open to visitors, and the rooftop cafés around the circle look straight across at the eyes.

Come at dusk, when the lamps are lit and the chanting starts from several directions at once.
