The oldest temple in the valley, on a ridge above Bhaktapur.
Overview
Changunarayan stands on a wooded hill north of Bhaktapur and is generally held to be the oldest Hindu temple still in use in the Kathmandu Valley. A stone pillar in the courtyard carries an inscription from 464 CE – the earliest dated inscription in Nepal.
The temple is dedicated to Vishnu, and the sculpture around it is the reason to make the trip: Vishnu as Vishwaroop and as Narsingha, Garuda kneeling before the entrance, and struts and doorframes worked to a standard that later temples rarely matched.
It sees a fraction of the visitors the squares do, and it is the natural end of the ridge walk down from Nagarkot.
