Chitwan National Park

3 Days

Nepal’s first national park, and its best-known wildlife destination.

Overview

Established in 1973 and made a World Heritage site in 1984, Chitwan protects nearly a thousand square kilometres of sal forest, riverine grassland and wetland in the central Terai.

It holds one of the world’s strongest populations of greater one-horned rhino, brought back from a few hundred animals, along with Bengal tiger, gaur, sloth bear, leopard, wild elephant and both gharial and mugger crocodile. The birdlife runs to more than five hundred species.

Access is from Sauraha or the quieter western sector, by jeep, on foot with an armed naturalist, or by canoe on the Rapti.
