Chitwan Tour

3 Days

The Terai lowlands – rhino, elephant grass, the Rapti river and Tharu villages along it.

Overview

Chitwan is the flat, hot, green other half of Nepal. The national park protects sal forest, grassland and river along the Indian border, and holds one of the strongest populations of greater one-horned rhino anywhere, along with tiger, gaur, sloth bear, gharial and something over five hundred bird species.

Days run to the rhythm of the animals: out at first light by jeep or on foot with a naturalist, a canoe down the Rapti, the heat of the middle of the day spent somewhere shaded, and out again in the late afternoon. Evenings usually take in a Tharu cultural programme in the village.

Two nights is the minimum that makes the journey worthwhile. Three is better.
