Dolakha’s high shrine at 3,842 metres, reachable in a day and often the first snow visitors see.
Overview
Kalinchok Bhagwati stands on a rocky summit above Kuri village in Dolakha, east of Kathmandu. It is a working pilgrimage site, and the walk up to the shrine ends on a narrow rock outcrop with a trident, a bell and a view over Gaurishankar, Dorje Lakpa and the Rolwaling peaks.
The drive takes most of a day, so this is usually an overnight: up to Kuri in the afternoon, cable car or a steep half-hour climb to the shrine, and down the next morning. From December to February there is normally snow at the top, which is why a good share of the visitors are Nepali families who have never seen any.
Warm clothing matters here in a way it does not on the valley-rim hikes.
