Lumbini Luxury Tour

We fly to Bhairahawa in thirty-five minutes rather than making the long drive, and it is a short transfer from the airport to your hotel near the sacred garden. Accommodation at Lumbini has improved considerably in recent years and the better properties are quiet, comfortable and set in their own grounds, which changes the experience of the site substantially. Late afternoon is the right time for a first visit: the Maya Devi temple with the light low and the coaches gone, the sacred pond, and the Ashokan pillar of 249 BCE. Lumbini is often done as a rushed day trip from Kathmandu, and doing it properly is the whole point of this itinerary.

The sacred garden early, before the crowds - the marker stone under the Maya Devi temple identifying the exact birthplace, the excavated monastery foundations from the third century BCE onwards, and the bodhi tree with pilgrims already circling it. After breakfast we take the monastic zone at walking pace, with a break somewhere shaded through the middle of the day; the zone stretches north along a canal to Kenzo Tange's master plan, and each Buddhist nation has built in its own architecture, which makes the walk between them the clearest demonstration anywhere of how far the teaching travelled. In the afternoon, optionally, Tilaurakot - ancient Kapilavastu, where the Buddha spent his first twenty-nine years, half an hour away and almost always empty.

A last morning at the site, which for most people is the visit that stays with them: the garden at first light, quiet, with the monks and pilgrims and very few visitors. Breakfast afterwards at leisure. We then drive to Bhairahawa for the flight back to Kathmandu, arriving in the middle of the day. Lumbini can also be joined by road to Chitwan in about four hours if you would rather continue than return.
