Lumbini Tour

3 Days

The birthplace of the Buddha, in the Terai near the Indian border.

Overview

Siddhartha Gautama was born at Lumbini in the sixth century BCE, and the site has the archaeology to show for it: the Maya Devi temple built over the marker stone, the Ashokan pillar raised in 249 BCE recording the emperor’s visit, and the foundations of monasteries going back more than two thousand years.

Around the sacred garden, the monastic zone holds temples built by Buddhist nations from Thailand and Myanmar to Germany and France – each in its own architecture, all facing the same birthplace. Walking between them is the clearest illustration anywhere of how far the teaching travelled.

Reachable by air to Bhairahawa or by road, and usually given a full day and a night rather than a rushed stop.
