Muktinath Tour

4 Days

A pilgrimage site sacred to Hindus and Buddhists alike, at 3,710 metres in lower Mustang.

Overview

Muktinath sits high above the Kali Gandaki in Mustang, and is one of very few places holy to both traditions – Vishnu as Mukti Narayan to Hindus, Chumig Gyatsa to Buddhists, who come for the same water and the natural gas flame burning behind the Jwala Mai shrine.

Pilgrims bathe under the 108 stone spouts that ring the temple, in water straight off the mountain. The setting is trans-Himalayan – bare, bright and windy, with Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri across the valley.

Reached by flight to Jomsom and jeep, by road the whole way, or on foot as part of the Annapurna Circuit. Altitude is real here and the day is planned around it.
