One of the three great Buddhist sites of the valley, on a hilltop in Kavre.
Overview
Namobuddha stands about forty kilometres south-east of Kathmandu, on a ridge above Panauti. The site marks the story of a prince who gave his body to a starving tigress and her cubs – an act of compassion in a previous life of the Buddha – and a stupa has stood here for a very long time.
Above it is Thrangu Tashi Yangtse, a large working monastery whose monks you will hear before you see. Visitors can walk the kora around the hill, sit in on the chanting, and eat in the monastery kitchen.
Usually combined with Panauti, a small and largely intact Newar town at the confluence below, and with Dhulikhel on the ridge opposite.
