The lake, the Annapurnas and as little of a schedule as you want.
Overview
Pokhara is the obvious choice and deserves to be: mountains from the room, a lake to be on, and a town small enough to walk. Sunrise at Sarangkot, a boat to Tal Barahi, the Peace Pagoda in the afternoon, and nothing at all planned for the rest.
Rooms are chosen for the view and the quiet rather than the address. Paragliding, a short flight along the Annapurnas, or a night up at Australian Camp can be added if you want them.
Everything is private – the car, the guide, the boat – and the days are yours to change on the morning.
Itinerary
Day 1 :
Fly to Pokhara
A twenty-five minute flight from Kathmandu, and into a room chosen for the view - mountains from the bed is the whole point of coming to Pokhara, and the properties that manage it are either up on the ridge above the lake or in quiet grounds set back from the main Lakeside strip. You are met at the airport and there is nothing to do on arrival but settle in. Flowers and a cake are waiting in the room. Late afternoon is for the walk along the lake road, which is what everybody ends up doing anyway, and dinner is by the water. Your guide meets you briefly to plan the following days around the weather rather than around a fixed schedule.
Day 2 :
Sarangkot at sunrise, Phewa in the afternoon
We drive up to Sarangkot at 1,592m privately, ahead of the shared jeeps, and are in position before the light comes. Annapurna I, II, III and IV, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre and Dhaulagiri light in sequence while the lake sits under mist several hundred metres below - it is the most reliable mountain sunrise in Nepal because the peaks are so close to the town. Back down for a long, late breakfast at the hotel with nothing scheduled after it. In the afternoon a private boat takes you out on Phewa when the water is still, across to the foot of the ridge and up to the World Peace Pagoda for the best single view of the lake, the town and the range together in the low light. Candlelit dinner by the lake.
Day 3 :
Nothing planned
Deliberately empty. Pokhara is one of the very few places in Nepal where a day with nothing in it is the right call rather than a wasted opportunity, and most couples end up using it for very little. If you would rather fill it, everything can be arranged the same morning: paragliding from Sarangkot, which is one of the best sites in the world for it; a mountain flight along the Annapurnas; a helicopter into the Annapurna sanctuary and back before lunch; Devi's Fall and the Gupteshwor cave beneath it; the International Mountain Museum; or the two-hour walk up to Australian Camp on the ridge, which can be done as an overnight. Your car and guide are on hand either way.
Day 4 :
Fly to Kathmandu
A last morning by the lake - breakfast with the mountains, a final boat, or the Bindhyabasini temple above the old bazaar, which is the oldest part of Pokhara and a quite different town from Lakeside. We then fly back to Kathmandu in twenty-five minutes, arriving in time for an onward connection or an afternoon in the city. If your international flight is the following day we hold a room and arrange the transfer to suit it.
