Grassland in the far-western corner, and the largest herd of swamp deer in the world.
Overview
Shuklaphanta sits in Kanchanpur, in Nepal’s south-western corner against the Indian border. Its name comes from the phanta – the open grasslands that make up much of it, the largest of which runs for kilometres without a tree.
Those grasslands hold the world’s largest population of barasingha, or swamp deer, in herds that can run to two thousand animals. There are also tiger, rhino, wild elephant and Bengal florican.
Very few visitors get this far west, which is the appeal. Access is from Mahendranagar, and the best months are the dry ones from February to April.
