A waterfall, a reservoir and a climb into Shivapuri National Park from the north-east corner of the valley.
Overview
Sundarijal lies at the edge of Kathmandu where the valley floor gives out and the hills begin. A stone stairway follows the Bagmati as it comes down through the forest in a series of falls, past the pipeline and reservoir that supply part of the city, and into Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park.
It is a steady uphill walk rather than a difficult one, and it can be turned round at any point. Walk far enough and you reach Chisapani on the ridge, where the trail continues into Helambu – which is why this is also the traditional first day of that trek.
Good for a half day or a full one, close enough to the city to combine with something else, and green in a way the valley floor no longer is.
