Namche Bazaar sits in a natural amphitheatre at 3,440 m, a horseshoe of lodges and shops stacked up the hillside. Every trekker heading into the Khumbu passes through, and almost every itinerary builds in a rest day here. Use it well.
Why the rest day is not optional
The climb from Phakding to Namche gains around 600 m, much of it in one relentless push. That is close to the safe daily limit, and Namche is where most people first notice the altitude. The extra night lets your body begin producing the red blood cells you will need higher up. Trekkers who skip it are markedly more likely to turn back later.
Climb high, sleep low
The best use of the day is a morning walk up to the Everest View Hotel at 3,880 m. It is a steady 90-minute climb, and on a clear morning you get your first proper sight of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam from the terrace. Then you descend to sleep back in Namche — exactly the profile that drives acclimatisation.
What else to do
- Sherpa Culture Museum — small, well-curated, and worth an hour for the expedition history alone.
- Saturday market — traders come up from the lowlands and across from Tibet. If your schedule allows, time your rest day for it.
- Khumjung village — a slightly longer walk to the monastery that claims to hold a yeti scalp.
- Coffee — Namche has genuinely good cafés, the last for a week. Make use of them.
Last chance for supplies
Namche is the final place with real shops. Gear here is a mix of genuine brands and convincing copies; prices are higher than Kathmandu but not outrageous. If you are missing gloves, a warm hat or a decent sleeping bag liner, buy it now. ATMs exist but are unreliable — carry cash.
Staying connected
Wi-Fi is available in most lodges but slow and charged by the hour. Mobile data works through Ncell and NTC in Namche and improves nothing above it. Tell people at home you will be out of contact.
